– AND HOW THE EGYPTIAN CHANTS (AND GODDESS ISIS) CAME TO SAVE ME –
5 years ago, I was working full time as a filmmaker – a director/producer/editor – I’d been a professional filmmaker for over 25 years. I’d made news stories for global broadcasters and feature documentaries about spirituality and tantra. But deep down I was unhappy… and ignoring all the warning signs.
At that point, I’d also been teaching spirituality for 12 years – ecstatic dance, then rebirthing breathwork, then tantra. But something was off… I just didn’t feel inspired to offer anything. I was barely even doing my regular spiritual practice and was struggling to feel connected to anything.
One day, I was filming in a garden in Ubud, Bali, and I plugged a light into an extension cable. The cable had a loose wire, but I didn’t even think about how dangerous it could be. Suddenly, I was being electrocuted – 240 volts flooding through my whole body – it was the most painful experience of my life. My mind only remembers 10 seconds of that experience, and yet in the hospital later that day, my friends told me it was actually 2 or 3 minutes. That’s when I realized how close I’d come to dying.
Over the months that followed, in some ways, I felt even more lost. But I gradually came to realize… I can’t be a filmmaker anymore. It’s not my passion… it pays the bills, but it just doesn’t light me up in the way it used to.
From out of nowhere, I felt an undeniable pull to Egyptian teachings. I’d learn an Ankh Breathwork practice years before, which I started doing every day. I found some ancient Egyptian chants and began working with them daily, chanting along with my little Indian Shruti (a drone instrument that’s great for singing).
One day, I chanted to Goddess Isis.
But the last thing I expected was for her to show up!

Some blamed them for Egypt’s downfall at the hands of the Roman Empire. Almost every single person in Egypt converted to Christianity or Islam.

It might sound crazy, but without Napoleon, we may never have been able to decode the ancient hieroglyphs. Back in 1799, the French were busy trying to wrestle control of Egypt from the British. Egypt was England’s trade route to Asia, and was valuable financially and politically. Napoleon knew if he could take Egypt, he would indirectly take down England.
Napoleon was also aware that Egypt was once a great civilization. Alongside his army, he sent an entourage of people to seek out and document their knowledge. When his team discovered the Rosetta stone – which had the same text written in hieroglyphs, demotic, and Greek – they struck linguistic gold.
Early translations rendered the teachings into English or other languages, but often left out any phonetic translation. Thankfully, today more and more authors are working with the tri-linear method of translation – in which you see the ancient hieroglyphs, the phonetic pronunciation, and the English translation in three lines.

In ancient Egypt, these chants were known as Hesi (ḥsỉ). The word “Hesi” means sacred utterance – sounds used to awaken, align, and invoke – to call to the gods to support and guide us.
